A bequest is a gift made to a nonprofit organization through your will or living trust, rather than during your lifetime. It’s a gift that is arranged now but typically fulfilled later, often as part of your overall estate and financial planning. Estate gifts (a term often used interchangeably with bequests) let you support a cause you care about without affecting your cash flow or assets during your lifetime. You retain full control and use of your assets while you’re living, and the gift only transfers after your lifetime.

When you create or update your will or trust, you include language directing that a portion of your estate goes to the organization. There’s no minimum gift size, and you can change your mind at any time before your death, since the gift doesn’t take effect until then.

  • Specific bequest — a particular dollar amount, asset, or piece of property (e.g., “$10,000” or “my house at [address]”)
  • Percentage bequest — a set percentage of your total estate, which automatically adjusts if your estate’s value changes over time
  • Residual bequest — whatever remains in your estate after other bequests, debts, and expenses have been paid
  • Contingent bequest — a gift that only takes effect under certain conditions, such as if a primary beneficiary doesn’t survive you

Bequests aren’t limited to cash. People often leave securities (stocks, bonds, mutual funds), real estate, retirement account assets (like an IRA or 401(k)), life insurance policy proceeds, and personal property (art, collectibles, etc.)

Bequests are generally exempt from federal estate taxes, since gifts to qualified nonprofits are deductible from the value of your taxable estate. Gifts of retirement assets can be especially tax-efficient, since those assets are often taxed heavily if left to individual heirs. (We recommend consulting an estate planning attorney or financial advisor for guidance specific to your situation.)

A bequest is a good option if you want to make a meaningful gift without impacting your current finances, want flexibility to adjust your plans over time, or want to leave a lasting legacy that reflects your values. If you would like to learn more or talk about this in more detail, please contact us at donate@nammfoundation.org.
