Internationally Acclaimed Mariachi Groups Bring Celebration of Community Through Music to The 2022 NAMM Show
May 30 through June 3, educators from across the country will gather at Orange Grove Elementary School in Anaheim, California, to attend a National Mariachi Workshop presented by The NAMM Foundation and co-sponsored by Conn-Selmer, Inc., Hal Leonard Corporation, and Yamaha.
This sold-out event brings together 80 music educators and The National Mariachi Workshops for Educators® to “equip music teachers with the materials and knowledge necessary to either start their own mariachi program or enhance the program they are already teaching.”
During the workshop, Maestro Jóse Hernàndez will present three levels of instruction, each containing a strand of vocal training, with all participants having the opportunity to perform on their primary instrument to learn the characteristic and stylistic nuances associated with various mariachi styles.
Marcia Neel, President of Music Education Consultants, Inc. and Yamaha’s Senior Director of Education reports that schools with growing Latino, Latina, and Latinx demographics have reported growing success in engaging students, parents, and local communities by implementing standards-based, traditional mariachi programs. On mariachi at The NAMM Show Neel said, “You can’t imagine how excited we were when we were invited to bring our Mariachi Workshops to Anaheim. Registration and the buzz surrounding the event is already over the top. We sold out within a few weeks and are on track to have the largest number of attendees in the program's history.”
While the workshop is sold-out, all NAMM Show attendees and educators are invited to join the mariachi celebration. On Saturday, June 4, four separate performances will showcase the musical mastery and artistic excellence of the genre.
Mariachi Joya de Las Vegas High School: Founded in 2018, and recently honored as “the nation’s premier mariachi ensemble” by SBO Magazine, the award-winning LVHS mariachi program has grown to encompass over 250 students, with only 20 joining the elite Mariachi Joya.
