About this Episode
Talking Up Music Education is a podcast from The NAMM Foundation that shares news and stories about music education. This week we’re highlighting episode 96, featuring music educator Anne Fennell.
In this episode Fennell reflects on the joy of teaching music, the limitless potential for creativity in music learning and re-imagining music education.
“We are biogenetically predisposed to create and be a part of music and to be a part of humanity, in relationship with one another,” said Fennell. “We need music. It is a part of our culture, and it's a valued part of who we are as humans. It defines us.”
Sound Bites
“My background is instrumental. Even though as a child I'd been kicked out of choir, I suddenly found myself needing to be a choral director, and learning about the voice and teaching students how to create music, and compose music and sing and play. It was beautiful. It helped me become a great high school teacher.” – Anne Fennell
“The joy of the learning process for me is infectious. It's so inspiring because you get to see the moment that [kids] learn, the moment they capture that little kernel, and it blooms into something, and their complete being just lights up because they have owned something larger than themselves.” – Anne Fennell
“Working with kids with music, is just a magical place. It really is.” – Mary Luehrsen
“I was tapping into every kid's passion. When you [do that] they learn exponentially without you. It's that ‘yes, and’ model.” – Anne Fennell
